Treatment of Sewage Sludge Compost Leachates on a Green Waste Biopile: A Case Study for an On-Site Application

This work proposes a suitable treatment for the leachates from sewage sludge composting process using specific windrow (biopile). The biopile’s evolution and organic content degradation were followed 2 months with regular leachate spraying to assess physico-chemical biological impacts, determine risk of enrichment certain monitored pollutants. final objective was valorization biopile substrates in process, while respecting quality standards use circular economy way. Classical parameters (pH, conductivity, dissolved carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TDN), etc.) measured water-extractable dry-solid fractions biopile, catabolic micro-organisms (diversity activities), as well persistent pollutants (POPs) (prioritized PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)), determined. results showed that microbial populations already present are responsible biodegradation, not affected by spraying. Even when studied compost highly concentrated ammonium (10.4 gN L?1 on average), it significantly decreased after weeks.
